Yet home workers find it most efficient to impose a fixed working structure upon themselves, with bigger blocks of concentrated work, and a few longer breaks in between.\u00a0<strong>Be sure to start your day with a shower and don\u2019t work in your pyjamas.<\/strong>\u00a0This will immediately get you into more of a work mindset.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tip-2-%e2%80%93-efficient-meetings\"><a class=\"anchor\" href=\"#tip-2-%e2%80%93-efficient-meetings\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><a id=\"2\"><\/a>Tip 2 \u2013 Efficient meetings<\/h2>\n<p>Ask yourself whether 17 people really need to take part in a meeting. Put together your meetings as practically as possible and use digital tools that work well. At StepStone we regularly use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluejeans.com\/\">BlueJeans<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/products.office.com\/nl-be\/microsoft-teams\/group-chat-software\">Microsoft Teams<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/intl\/en-be\/?eu_nc=1\">Slack<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hangouts.google.com\/?hl=nl\">Google Hangouts<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zoom.us\/\">Zoom<\/a>\u00a0and (made in Belgium)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vectera.com\/home\/\">Vectera<\/a>\u00a0are also well-known online communication tools.\u00a0<strong>Actively involve all participants in the meetings and avoid people adopting a passive attitude during the meeting.<\/strong>\u00a0You can use the 5-minute rule for this: every 5 minutes, check what someone thinks, whether someone has any other ideas, etc.<strong>\u00a0Is there someone that can\u2019t make it? Record the meeting and send a short report with concrete decisions and a to-do list to all participants immediately afterwards.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tip-3-%e2%80%93-keep-on-communicating\"><a class=\"anchor\" href=\"#tip-3-%e2%80%93-keep-on-communicating\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><a id=\"3\"><\/a>Tip 3 \u2013 Keep on communicating<\/h2>\n<p><strong>When you\u2019re working from home, communicate even more regularly than in the office.<\/strong>\u00a0Not to prove that \u2018you are actually working\u2019, but to avoid misunderstandings and to ensure that you don\u2019t become lonely and isolated. Make sure that you keep everyone involved informed.\u00a0<strong>Don\u2019t send extremely long emails, but keep things short and to the point.<\/strong>\u00a0Compile a brief update on your work for your manager every week. Many teams use the free tool\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/\">Trello<\/a>\u00a0for efficient project management.\u00a0<strong>As a manager, this gives you a handy overview of how the project is progressing and who is doing which tasks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tip-4-%e2%80%93-take-good-care-of-yourself\"><a class=\"anchor\" href=\"#tip-4-%e2%80%93-take-good-care-of-yourself\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><a id=\"4\"><\/a>Tip 4 \u2013 Take good care of yourself<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Stay healthy while you\u2019re working from home.<\/strong>\u00a0Schedule regular breaks. Make sure that you stay active. Keep away from sugary foods, but stock up on fresh fruit, dried fruits and nuts to snack on. Get out in the fresh air every day.\u00a0<strong>Take advantage of the time that\u2019s been freed up by not having to commute.<\/strong>\u00a0Also make sure you don\u2019t go to bed too late.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tip-5-%e2%80%93-ignore-your-household-chores-during-the-day\"><a class=\"anchor\" href=\"#tip-5-%e2%80%93-ignore-your-household-chores-during-the-day\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><a id=\"5\"><\/a>Tip 5 \u2013 Ignore your household chores during the day<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Set aside fixed times in your work schedule to possibly do household tasks<\/strong>. Make sure that you stay fully focused when you\u2019re concentrating on work, and don\u2019t keep heading to your dishwasher, washing machine, messy cupboards or vacuum cleaner.\u00a0<strong>Plan these tasks ahead of time for mental peace of mind.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tip-6-%e2%80%93-working-from-home-with-children\"><a class=\"anchor\" href=\"#tip-6-%e2%80%93-working-from-home-with-children\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><a id=\"6\"><\/a>Tip 6 \u2013 Working from home with children<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It is virtually impossible to focus on work whilst simultaneously minding your children<\/strong>. But now that schools are closed and people are obliged to work from home, we have no choice but to do this to the best of our ability. Are there two adults at home? If so,\u00a0<strong>take it in turns to mind the children. The parent that\u2019s in their \u2018work bubble\u2019 that day should be left in peace as much as possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are you at home alone with your children and do you also have to work?\u00a0<strong>In that case, plan out a programme for your children<\/strong>\u00a0(for example use Maison Slash\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/maisonslash.be\/thing-maker\/5wekentotpasen-de-dagplanner\">handy planner<\/a>) with tasks, assignments and games, and make it their responsibility to complete their tasks successfully. Children love structure and ticking off lists or colouring in to-do lists.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maison Slash has put together inspiration for parents\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/5wekentotpasen\/?fref=nf\">in this Facebook group<\/a>\u00a0to get through these #fiveweekstilleaster.<\/li>\n<li>The first month on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0is free. But it\u2019s still healthy to limit screen time and go outside frequently (although be sure to keep a safe distance from others!).<\/li>\n<li>The library is putting a whole series of free\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlinebibliotheek.nl\/luisterbieb.html\">audio books<\/a>\u00a0(for children and adults) online.<\/li>\n<li>Come up with a longer project that will keep them occupied for a few days, like \u2018make as many buildings as possible with all your Lego bricks\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wablieft.be\/nl\/krant?fbclid=IwAR3L_s2gUDo4xHV_IrWqeTLqlFrYM8evUe-NPmDuqODZ3d8zzIYxpfbnsrY\">Wablieft newspaper<\/a>\u00a0is temporarily granting free access to all its articles. These are ideal reading material for children and those less keen on reading.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2019\/02\/download-free-coloring-books-from-113-museums.html\">This site<\/a>\u00a0contains colouring pages from 113 museums worldwide.<\/li>\n<li>Set up a book swap with neighbours (and do it safely: wash your hands!).<\/li>\n<li>Focus on work as much as possible while the children are napping, while they\u2019re watching their daily film, or \u2013 if there\u2019s no other option \u2013 after they\u2019ve gone to bed.<\/li>\n<li>Above all, make the best of it. Enjoy your time together. Don\u2019t get stressed. And the most important thing of all: wash your hands \u2013 frequently!<\/li>\n<li>Make trips to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.natuurpunt.be\/wandelen\">nature reserves<\/a>\u00a0(take your own drinks and picnic with you and carefully pick up your rubbish) or stay on the sofa and enjoy a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelandleisure.com\/attractions\/museums-galleries\/museums-with-virtual-tours\">virtual museum visit<\/a>\u00a0in twelve world-famous museums.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"employers-trust-your-employees-and-be-understantding\"><a class=\"anchor\" href=\"#employers-trust-your-employees-and-be-understantding\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><a id=\"7\"><\/a>Employers : trust your employees and be understantding<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Employers need to show understanding for the situation during this coronavirus pandemic<\/strong>. At the same time, they have to trust that their home-working staff really will be doing their work.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/press.securex.be\/9-op-10-bedienden-verzet-thuis-meer-werk-dan-op-kantoor\">Research shows that<\/a>\u00a0employees do more work when they are working from home than they do in the office, despite the fact that they spend slightly fewer hours working.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHome working can only be successful if you are confident that your staff will perform their roles, regardless of whether you can see them or not,\u201d says Aaron McEwan, Vice President of the research bureau Gartner. Managers often worry that they have no overview of the work routines and workflows of their home-working staff. Home workers organise their work around the times of day when they are most productive. The trust their manager places in them motivates them to do their work well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, there\u2019s absolutely no point in laying down bureaucratic rules such as \u2018email your boss if you\u2019re taking a break\u2019.
