More & more companies are starting to interview candidates via online web tools. Jobs.lu prepares you for this digital method!

An increasing number of companies and recruiters – especially for the first round – use video interviews. A method that is often much more effective for both the recruiter and the candidate. Jobs.lu gives you 6 tips to make an unforgettable impression.

The increasing method of video interviews

Although this high-tech method has been around for some time, an increasing number of companies and recruitment agencies (especially large ones) are using recruitment videos. There are no exact statistics on the use of this new method in Belgium, but it is clear that this practice is on the rise.

For the recruiter, it is the ideal way to organize an effective meeting and possibly to carry out a first screening. This new method also offers advantages for the candidate. The candidate does not have to travel and can make up for a lack of experience or a CV that is not quite up to scratch with a wonderful first impression.

6 tips for convincing with a video application

Since this is a relatively new method, you may appreciate some advice as a candidate. We therefore already give you 6 tips to consider if you are invited for a video interview.

1. Prepare your equipment/environment

Make sure your equipment is working properly and is correctly adjusted. Place the camera at eye level, check that the microphone is working well, and choose a neutral background. Set up in a professional environment and remove anything distracting from the scene. During this interview the focus is on you, and a first impression is also very important in a recruitment video.

2. Answer possible questions in advance.

You can prepare for possible questions as you would for a personal interview. Practice beforehand. Filming and evaluating your answers can be very useful. It’s a way to sharpen your personal presentation and improve your credibility in the ‘real’ video interview. You will also become more familiar with the camera.

3. Concentrate and look at the camera

Try to control your stage fright. You need to stay calm to convince the recruiter. Adopt a calm attitude, maintain eye contact and look at the camera rather than the screen. Concentrate and avoid diverting your attention to secondary issues. You are in the middle of a recruitment interview.

4. Wear business attire

Dress as you would if you were going to a personal interview with a recruiter. In this way you help to create the right atmosphere and make a good impression on the interviewer.

5. Also show non-verbal interest

Having a ‘connection’ is essential when you apply. Getting it in video interviews is a bit more difficult, but try to do it anyway. Actively listen, smile and ask questions.

6. Be brief and concise

Video interviews are not suitable for long speeches. Keep your answers short and concise. It is not always necessary to be verbose in order to be convincing. Again, conclude the interview correctly.

At the end of the interview, summarize your strengths and assets, ask any additional questions and thank the recruiter for his or her time.
